Loris Carlo DePrato was born in Munich, Germany to Italian immigrants. He lived in Italy and Germany until 1998, when he married and moved to Orange, Vermont.
Mr. DePrato grew up in the ice cream business. In fact, he is the third generation of DePrato's making gelato based on the family recipes. He learned the business from his father and worked along side him from 1982 to 1992. While in Europe, Mr. DePrato learned the bakery and pastry business receiving a diploma from Bakery in South Germany.
After working ten years in his father's ice cream shop, he ran his own successful ice cream business in Germany for five years. After settling in the United States, he operated a coffee shop and ice cream parlor in Stowe, Vermont where he started producing Leonardo's Italian Gelato & Sorbet.
After meeting Mr. Lesser, who was excited to distribute the gelato, Mr. DePrato started producing for the wholesale market in 2000. In 2001, the wholesale business was moved to Barre, allowing concentration solely on making ice cream for the wholesale market.
Born in New York, Michael Lesser has lived in Vermont for nearly 30 years. In true entrepreneurial spirit, after tasting Mr. DePrato's gelato while at the Stowe coffee shop, he purchased some for his route customers to try. The response was so remarkable the Mr. Lesser then devoted his entire business to distributing Leonardo's Italian Gelato & Sorbet.
